Sierra Community Theatre will bring classic movies to its big screen in its first Classic Movies Week Jan. 23-29. Classic Movies Week is a fundraiser for the theatre; no admission will be charged, but patrons are invited to make a donation to support the non-profit theatre. SCT board president Jim Daubendiek explained that generous sponsorships of the movies are making the fundraiser possible.
Opening the week will be “Gone With the Wind,” sponsored by Jefferson Telecom. The 1939 movie epic won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Hattie McDaniel won an Oscar for her role as Mammy; she was the first black to win an Oscar. Show times are Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 6 pm, with matinees Saturday and Sunday at 12:30 pm.
Next on the calendar is “The Goonies,” sponsored by Greene Bean Coffee. The 1985 American adventure comedy will be shown Monday and Tuesday at 7 pm with a matinee Tuesday at 2 pm.
Movie Classics Week will wrap up with “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” sponsored by Rasmussen Law Offices. The 1981 Steven Spielberg adventure movie was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won four. Show times are Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 28-29, at 7 pm with a Wednesday matinee at 2 pm.
Daubendiek said the SCT board hopes to meet two goals with Movie Classics Week. “We’ve had people ask if we couldn’t bring some of the classics to our big screen, so that’s what we’re doing. We also hope it will be a fundraiser for the theatre,” he said.
The theatre breaks even on normal operations, Daubendiek said, but large expenses are a challenge. The board will spend $8,000 for a new air conditioning unit this spring. He hopes Movie Classics Week will raise funds for the purchase.
“Jefferson Telecom is happy to be a sponsor, and we’re very grateful to Rich and Reagan Osborne at Greene Bean Coffee and Mark Rasmussen for their sponsorships. We hope people will come enjoy the movies and make a donation,” Daubendiek said.
He added that depending on community support, there will be Classic Movie Weeks in future years.
